Culling the Lettuce

Is culling even the right word? As you know - my lettuce has been growing fabulously - but I noticed today that the leaves were looking pretty wilty. (now I think I am making up my words!)

Now, I don't think it is over-ripe because I did some research to see what Little Gem Lettuce looks like when it is ripe - and it looks like a small version of romaine. So I decided to pull out the 'stalks' (not sure if that is the right word either) of the more wilty (there is that new word again) looking lettuce, and hopefully that will be enough for me to at least get a couple of heads out of this batch. At least I can probably get another crop in this season :-).

To be honest, I thought this was a loose leaf lettuce, which is why I put so many in there - and then my daughter moving the seeds around did help either. But you know, even if I don't get that much out of this growing season - I am learning a LOT! And each year I will get better until I am growing with the best of 'em!!

Now - I didn't know what to do with the lettuce I picked. I didn't have the heart to toss it. If I had a composting machine, that is where it would go - but unfortunately I do not. So - any ideas?

I don't think you had to pull the entire head out. Older leaves will seem to wilt and hang to the ground. Eventually, they will die back in favor of the newer leaves that form toward the heart. Even with a romaine, you can harvest the outer leaves like you would on loose-leafed lettuce. Just don't wait until they are so wilty, so that you can enjoy them instead.

Before the compost tumbler, I piled it in a small space, not even walled in. It was a slow way to make compost but it worked and I still always have a pile waiting to go into the tumbler that I still find nice dirt in the bottom of. You can compost in next to no space if you are interested. Your lettuce looks good!
